Prez polls could be as significant as 1969: Sangma -
Bhubaneswar, July 15 - Enthused by backing from 18 political parties, opposition Presidential Candidate P A Sangma today hoped to draw support from some more parties and said the July 19 polls could be as significant as the one held in 1969 when V V Giri defeated the Congress candidate. Eighteen political parties have given commitment to support me.

New Delhi, Jun 11 - The announcement on Presidential election schedule is due shortly, new Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath today said. "All preparatory works are in full swing and an announcement regarding the election schedule is due shortly," he said soon after assuming charge as the CEC.

Mumbai, Jun 10 - Sharad Pawar-led NCP today said here that the party would support the "UPA candidate" in the forthcoming Presidential election. "NCP would back the UPA candidate...the final decision would be taken by Sharad Pawar on this," said Baramati MP and Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule here this afternoon.
Prez candidate: 'UPA will take consensus from allies' -
Chennai, June 10 - The UPA leadership would take the maximum amount of consensus from its allies in selecting the candidate for the post of President, who must carry the conviction and support of as many political parties as possible, Law Minister Salman Khurshid said today. "We are in the process. You will get a very good candidate. Our senior leadership is looking at the names and the leadership is in touch with all alliance partners," Khurshid told reporters.
Presidential poll: BJP to open cards once UPA names candidate -
Hyderabad, Jun 10 - Former Union Minister and BJP official spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain today said his party would disclose its strategy on Presidential election only after the ruling coalition announces name of its candidate. Until the ruling Congress party does not announce name of its candidate for President's post, BJP would keep its cards close to its chest, Shahnawaz told reporters here.

New Delhi, June 9 - Against the backdrop of growing support for Pranab Mukherjee to be the UPA nominee for the post of President, the Congress party today issued a curious statement saying no name has so far been finalised. Janardan Dwivedi, head of the Congress media department and General Secretary, volunteered a brief statement which said "the process of discussions with our allies and supporting allies is on. No name has so far been finalised."
Prez poll: Sangma meets Advani -
New Delhi, June 8 - Former Lok Sabha Speaker and NCP leader P A Sangma today met BJP leader L K Advani in an apparent bid to solicit the support of the NDA for his candidature as President. Sangma met Advani, who is also the NDA Working Chairperson, at the latter's residence this morning. The meeting lasted around 20 minutes.

Though the process for presidential polls is likely to start next week, the UPA is yet to name its candidate for the post. President Pratibha Patil's term will end on July 24. New Delhi, Jun 7 - DMK leaders T R Baalu and M K Stalin today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and are believed to have discussed the issue of selection of a candidate for the presidential election. The meeting lasted for around 5 to 7 minutes and was described by the DMK leaders as a courtesy call.
