The BJP on Thursday announced its support to the candidature of PA Sangma in the Presidential election. While the BJP also claimed Shiromani Akal Dal’s support to Sangma, there was a vertical split in NDA as an important ally Janata Dal(U) decided to back UPA’s nominee Pranab Mukherjee. Puri, Jun 21 - Welcoming BJP's decision to support P A Sangma in the Presidential poll, BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik today said all political parties should support the former Lok Sabha Speaker. "I welcome the BJP's decision of supporting Sangma. All political parties should support Sangma who is a tribal," Patnaik, the Odisha Chief Minister, told reporters on the sideline of the annual car festival of Lord Jagannath here.

New Delhi, Jun 21 - With BJP supporting P A Sangma in the Presidential race, NCP today regretted that he has become the nominee of "communal forces" in a contest in which UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee will have a "decisive victory". Party spokesman D P Tripathi said the development also showed the "bankruptcy" of BJP that they had to "import" a candidate from UPA.

New Delhi, Jun 21 - Reconciling with division within NDA over Presidential poll, BJP today announced its support to P A Sangma to pit him against UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee. The party, which failed to persuade allies like Shiv Sena and JD-U to support Sangma, argued that it was its duty as the main Opposition party not to allow a "walkover" to Congress which did not "consult" it.
