Exodus of North East people continues from Karnataka -
Bangalore, Aug 17 - Appeals and assurances of safety by the Karnataka government notwithstanding, people from North East continued to flee the state in hordes for the third consecutive day today, driven by rumours of impending attacks. The exodus so far confined to Bangalore has now spread to some other parts with people of the North Eastern region living in Mysore, Mangalore and Kodagu arriving here in trains and buses and rushing to railway counters to buy tickets.

The national-level panic created among north-easterners living in various metros and big towns of India and the renewed flare-up of violence in Assam has had one positive fallout: we all now know that the north-east exists (we can now find those teeny-weeny states on the map); and we have learnt to acknowledge that they are Indians like any of us (they are not Chinese, despite the shapes of their eyes or facial features). |
Illegal migrants responsible for attacks on N-E people: Gadkari -
New Delhi, Aug 16 - BJP president Nitin Gadkari today alleged that illegal migrants living in Assam and other parts of the country are responsible for the attacks on people from the North East and the recent violence at Mumbai's Azad Maidan. "The attacks in some parts of the country on people from the North East is unfortunate... These are being perpetrated by illegal migrants living in the country. There is a foreign hand in this. The Centre should deal firmly with such incidents," Gadkari told PTI.

Kohima, Aug 14 - Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today urged Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde to ensure security of people, particularly students, hailing from the northeast and working or studying in other parts of the country. In his letter, Rio expressed serious concern over reports of students and people belonging to the northeast being attacked and threatened in certain parts of the country, including Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Bangalore.
