Protests in Lucknow after Friday prayers; media attacked -
Lucknow, Aug 17 - A protest march after the last Friday prayers of Ramadan today turned violent here as a group of people, shouting slogans against alleged atrocities on minorities in Assam and Myanmar, resorted to stone pelting and vandalism. The protest march which started from near the Tile Wali Masjid created a ruckus on its way forcing business establishments to close down and vandalising parks and vehicles, a senior police official said.
Facebook, Twitter in focus after rumours over NE people -
New Delhi, Aug 17 - In the wake of rumours which have created panic among people from North East, social media like Facebook and Twitter today came under sharp focus in Parliament with demands for putting control on the networking sites. Members in both Houses of Parliament alleged that the social networking sites were being used to spread wrong, distorted and provocative content.
No official data but many from NE flee Maharashtra -
Mumbai/Nashik, Aug 17 - Gripped by fear over their safety following sporadic attacks targeting those from the northeast in Pune, several hundred people from the region living in Maharashtra are believed to have fled to their respective states over the last few days. Though there are no official data about the number of people who have left the state in the wake of the Pune incidents, Opposition BJP today claimed over 6000 had headed back to their states.

Mumbai, Aug 17 - Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray today demanded resignation of Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil and Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik for failing to handle the last Saturday's violence in south Mumbai. "Home Minister R R Patil and Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik should resign, as they have failed to handle the situation," he said at a press conference here, and announced a protest march on Tuesday.

New Delhi, Aug 17 - To check spread of rumours which has led to exodus of north eastern people from certain states, government banned from today bulk SMSes and MMSes for 15 days across the country. "We have banned bulk SMSes and MMSes for 15 days," Union Home Secretary R K Singh told PTI.

New Delhi, Aug 17 - Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said miscreants spreading rumours that have led to people belonging to North East flee from Bangalore, Pune and other parts of the country, should be brought to book. Making a statement after Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari suspended Question Hour to take up a discussion on the issue, Singh said at stake is not just unity and integrity of the country, but also communal harmony.
