Srikakulam/Hyderabad, May 30 - Hitting the campaign trail for bypolls in Andhra Pradesh following the arrest of her son YSR Congress chief Jagan Mohan Reddy, Y S Vijaya Lakshmi today alleged that there is a conspiracy to defame him and demanded that the Centre and state government clarify "doubts" over the death of her husband Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

As the Special CBI Court on Tuesday adjourned hearing till Thursday on a bail petition filed by Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, there was growing discomfiture within the Congress government in Andhra Pradesh over the move backfiring on the party. Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy called a meeting of his Cabinet colleagues on Tuesday to find out if party workers in their native districts are switching sides en masse to Jagan Mohan-led YSR Congress Party.

Alleging the hand of Congress in the arrest of YSR Congress chief Jagan Mohan Reddy, he said the ruling party was frightened by the prospect of losing the bypolls to 18 Assembly segments and one Lok Sabha seat.

Hyderabad, May 28 - With her son Jaganmohan Reddy in jail, YS Vijaya will lead the campaign of YSR Congress in the June 12 by-elections to 17 assembly and one Lok Sabha seat in Andhra Pradesh. Vijaya, a housewife who entered politics after the death of her husband and former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy in a chopper crash in 2009, was urged by the party's General Council today to take the mantle of her son in the by-elections, seen as precursor to the 2014 general elections.

In the wake of his arrest, YSR Congress decided to field Y S Vijaya, the widow of former Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, as the main campaigner in the crucial June 12 bye- elections to 17 assembly constituencies and a Lok Sabha seat in the state.
