Situation in lower Assam calm, three deaths in Dhubri camps

Kokrajhar/Dhubri, July 31 - With improvement in the situation in strife-torn lower Assam areas where 56 people lost their lives, curfew was today relaxed in Kokrajhar for two more hours, while night curfew continued in Chirang and Dhubri district.

Official sources said there was no fresh incidence of violence anywhere and curfew in Kokrajhar would be in force between 8 pm and 6 am till further orders.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, who visited three camps set up for victims of the Bodo-immigrant clashes in Dhubri, faced slogan-shouting from refugees in one who were objecting to the visit of Assam Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain along with him.

He pacified the refugees, who alleged that Hussain did not help them despite repeated appeals when they were attacked by Bodos last week in neighbouring Kokrajhar.

He also assured them that their grievances would be taken care of.

Assam government said police pickets would be posted in the villages of the affected areas and adequate security forces had already been deployed.

Assam Health and Education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also visited Kokrajhar and assured that adequate medical facilities for relief camps inmates would be ensured.

He said free text books and other educational materials would be provided to students.

Meanwhile, concerns grew about the healthcare of the displaced people following death of three persons in relief camps in Dhubri.

District officials today said a 32 year-old person died of fever at the Belapara school camp at Tamaharhat in the district, while a 72-old-year women died at a camp at Kamadanga HS Madrassa.

An infant died within minutes of its birth at Tilapara ME Madrassa at Suparighat.

Inmates at the camp alleged that medical help was not provided to the expectant mother on time. PTI
