Rains lash UP, major rivers remain above danger mark


Lucknow, Aug 7 - Major rivers in Uttar Pradesh remained above the danger mark as the monsoon deluge continued today with most parts of the state witnessing heavy rain.

According to Central Water Commission sources, Sharda at Palia Kalan, Ghaghra at Elgin Bridge, Ayodhya and Turtipar, Rapti at Balrampur and Burrhi Rapti at Kakrahi continued to flow above the danger mark.

Meanwhile, state irrigation minister Shivpal Singh Yadav undertook an aerial survey of the flood-affected eastern districts today and directed administrative officials to launch relief measures for villages inundated by swollen rivers.

Major amount of rainfall recorded in cms are: Moth-7, Muzaffarnagar-5, Agra, Mauranipur and Katerniaghat-4 each, Robertganj, Churk, Jaunpur, Lalganj, Jhansi, Mahroni, Garotha, Atrauli and Mawana-3 each.

The MeT department said heavy rains and thundershowers are likely to continue at many places in west Uttar Pradesh and at a few places in the state's east in the next 24 hours. PTI
