Guwahati, July 13 - Team Anna member and peasant leader Akhil Gogoi today demanded imposition of President's Rule in Assam claiming worsening law and order situation in the state in the wake of Monday incident where a teenage girl was molested by some youths in the streets of Guwahati.
"There is total anarchy in the state. The state government is being run by lumpen elements and criminals, who are getting encouragement and protection of senior ministers and Congress leaders," Gogoi told reporters here.
Demanding dismissal of the state government for "failure on law and order front", the RTI activist demanded a CBI inquiry on the assault on the girl.
"Both the assault on her as well as the assault on me that was done by Youth Congress workers at Nalbari last week should be probed by the CBI. Such crimes are all of same magnitude and point to the total collapse of law and order in the state," Gogoi said.
Gogoi, who is also general secretary of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, cited the latest figures from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) which showed that the rate of violent crimes in Assam was the third highest in the country in 2011.
"The state police DGP is aware of where the molesters of the girl are hiding. He is aware of who was behind the attack on me. But the official is helpless in face of pressure from the government who are hell bent to protecting the criminals," he said.
Members of the KMSS, in association with India Against Corruption and other activists groups, will gather on Sunday in Guwahati to protest the breakdown of law and order in the state. PTI
