Romney urges congressman to quit after rape remarks - France24
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney called on a congressman to abandon his U.S. Senate bid in the Midwestern state of Missouri, but the congressman has refused to heed calls to step down from Republicans who fear his comments about rape have threatened the party’s bid to gain control of Congress in November. Rep. Todd Akin’s comments that women’s bodies can prevent pregnancies in cases of “legitimate rape” ignited a firestorm, but he continued to defy top Republicans as he ignored a key deadline to drop out Tuesday and forged ahead with his besieged Senate campaign. Akin declared that his party’s leaders were overreacting by abandoning him. He was once seen as a strong challenger to incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill in Missouri, a pivotal target for Republicans as they attempt win control of the Senate. Republicans already control the House of Representatives.
Mitt Romney's tax returns - Neeraj Kaushal, Economic Times
The great recession has slaughtered incumbents in many western countries. Since 2009, governments in 12 countries of the EU, including Britain, Italy, Greece, France, Denmark, Spain, Ireland and Portugal, have been voted out of office. While elections in each case had a distinct national flavour, perceived failure of governments to lessen the severity of the recession was, without exaggeration, the primary cause of their fall. Barack Obama, the first black person to become US President, is facing re-election in November. If the stubbornly-high unemployment numbers are a guide, Obama's political fate may not be very different from those of European leaders like Gordon Brown, Silvio Berlusconi, Nicolas Sarkozy and Lucas Papademos. Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, could not have gotten a better opportunity to be the next President.
Romney's selection of Ryan will have effects well beyond 2012 - Charles Krauthammer, News Investors
Vice presidential picks are always judged by their effect on the coming election. They rarely have any. This time could be different. The Democrats' Mediscare barrage is already in full swing. Paul Ryan, it seems, is determined to dispossess grandma, then toss her over a cliff. If the charge is not successfully countered, goodbye Florida. Republicans have a twofold answer. First, hammer home that their plan affects no one over 55, let alone 65. Second, go on offense. Point out that President Obama cuts Medicare by $700 billion to finance ObamaCare.
Romney-Ryan Ticket Puts Entitlement Crisis at Center of Campaign - Michael Barone, Real Clear Politics
On the USS Wisconsin in Norfolk harbor, a coatless Mitt Romney named a tieless Paul Ryan as his vice presidential nominee. Romney's choice was not much of a surprise after he told NBC's Chuck Todd on Thursday that he wanted someone with a "vision for the country, that adds something to the political discourse about the direction of the country. I mean, I happen to believe this is a defining election for America, that we're going to be voting for what kind of America we're going to have."
