Hyderabad: Former Speaker of Lok Sabha and an aspirant for President of India's post P A Sangma on Monday met Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu and sought the party's support for his candidature in presidential election. "I have sought the support and blessings of Chandrababu Naidu, who is one of the most prominent political leaders of the country. He told me that he would take a decision after discussing the issue with the TDP's politburo," Sangma told newsmen after the 30-minute meeting.

In an unusual development, Congress on Saturday scotched the speculation that party has picked finance minister Pranab Mukherjee to be its nominee for next month's presidential polls. The Election Commission of India (EC) on Tuesday began preparations to finalise the schedule for the presidential elections. A full bench meeting held at the Nirvachan Sadan, headquarters of EC here decided to announce the schedule in the second week of June, after holding a meeting with Rajya Sabha secretary general VK Agnihotri, who will be the returning officer. The commission has also called a meeting with secretaries of state assemblies, who will be the assistant returning officers, besides the Rajya Sabha secretariat. Pratibha Patil’s tenure ends on July 24 and the new President is to be sworn in the very next day.

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Tuesday said no bureaucrat or non-political person should be elected as President, in a remark which was seen as signaling his reservations about Vice-President Hamid Ansari's strong candidature for the top constitutional position and can deepen the suspense about UPA's candidate for the top job. "I am not in favour of appointment of bureaucrats to constitutional positions," said Mulayam who will be a factor in determining who of the two frontrunners for UPA nomination: Ansari or finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, takes the field in the July elections.
