The First Citizen’s possibly last independent speech from Parliament was high on soaring prose and chronicled the “journey that has brought me from the flicker of a lamp in a small Bengal village to the chandeliers of Delhi”. But it was another line that caught the attention of many in the audience and tickled some pink with the mischievous possibilities it offered. “There is no humiliation more abusive than hunger. Trickle-down theories do not address the legitimate aspirations of the poor. We must lift those at the bottom so that poverty is erased from the dictionary of modern India,” President Pranab Mukherjee, minutes ago sworn in to the highest constitutional office of the land, said in his acceptance speech.
