No surprises in North-East poll results - Mail Today
The Congress failed to do a Trinamool Congress in Tripura as the ruling Left Front retained its bastion for the fifth consecutive term since 1993 even as it failed to wrest power from the ruling Naga People's Front in Nagaland. The only face-saver for the party was Meghalaya, where it retained power in the results of the assembly elections to the three north-eastern states which were declared on Thursday.

Nagaland Assembly Elections: Neiphiu Rio’s magic works again - Biplob Ghosal, ZeeNews
It seems Neiphiu Rio exactly knows the pulse of people of the northeastern state of Nagaland. This was evident when the ruling Naga Peoples Front (NPF) returned to power with an absolute majority in Nagaland winning 38 seats in the 60-member Assembly. In 2008, the NPF and Congress secured 26 and 23 seats respectively. But this time around, the picture is totally different. While, the ruling party has increased its tally by 12 seats, the main opposition party, Congress...

Congress retains power in Meghalaya - LensOnNews
The Congress retained power in Meghalaya after emerging as the single largest party, bagging 29 seats, 2 short of an absolute majority, in the Assembly election results that were declared today. In the 2008 Assembly election, the Congress had bagged 25 seats. The results are a shot in the arm of Congress chief minister Mukul Sangma who faced stiff opposition from old warhorse P A Sangma who had quit Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party to form the National People's Party last year.

Left pulls off emphatic win in Tripura sweeping 50 of 60 seats - Times of India
The Left Front on Thursday retained power in Tripura for the fifth consecutive time, sweeping 50 of the 60 seats and leaving the Congress badly bruised with just 10 seats. Hundreds of Left activists, mainly from the Communist Party of India-Marxist CPI(M), celebrated across the state as election results left the Congress in gloom.

Huge protest vote leaves Italy facing deadlock - Barry Moody and James Mackenzie, Reuters
A huge protest vote by Italians enraged by economic hardship and political corruption left the euro zone's third-largest economy facing a dangerous vacuum on Monday after an election in which no group won enough votes to form a government. The result, in which anti-euro parties took more than 50 percent of the vote and a novice populist movement scored a stunning success, rocked global markets with fears of a new euro zone crisis.

Govt bonanza for Muslims - Maneesh Pandey, Mail Today
With elections to several state assemblies on the horizon and the Lok Sabha polls next year, the UPA government wants to leave no stone unturned to woo the crucial "Muslim vote bank". The government is raining sops to get the 10 crore-odd voters from the minority community back to its poll tent. In what could be a gamechanger among Muslim voters, the minority affairs ministry has decided to increase the loan limit for small entrepreneurs and self-help groups from the existing Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.

Circus Maximus - Gianini Riotta, ForeignPolicy
In January, former Italian prime minister and current candidate Silvio Berlusconi praised Benito Mussolini, Italy's dictator for some 20 years, saying that the racial laws of 1938, which barred Jews from universities and many jobs, "are the worst fault of Mussolini, who, in so many other aspects, did good." A few days later, Berlusconi questioned a young woman in front of a laughing crowd, asking, "Do you come? Only once? How many times do you come? With what sort of time intervals?

Nagaland polls: the murky realities - Sudeep Chakravarti, Mint
There has been a cry for clean elections to Nagaland’s assembly in the run-up to polling on 23 February—for my money a decisive and positive mark in this land of many negatives. Alas, it has had to combat that other electoral cry: Kiman poysha dibi? In Nagamese, the bazaar language that binds several Naga tribes: how much money will you give? And unsaid: is there liquor on the side? That became evident when the vehicle in which Nagaland’s home minister Imkong L. Imchen was travelling on 18 February drove into a search-and-seizure bust by personnel of Assam Rifles.

Italy’s important election - John Lloyd, Reuters
“I’ll be back” has been Silvio Berlusconi’s frequent slogan since he first departed from the political field two decades ago. His first government, in 1994, lasted a mere year. It ended in semi-farce when his main ally, the Northern League, pulled out. Prosecutors announced an investigation into alleged corruption while he hosted a G8 meeting in Naples. But he was back in 2001 through 2006, when he lost by a whisker to the left; then back again in 2008, when a stumbling left government lost its majority.

Nagaland’s constricted choice - Amongla N Jamir, Indian Express
Lately, Nagaland has become the centre of a political duel between the state's contesting parties as well as between the UPA and the BJP. Never before has Nagaland seen such a rich galaxy of star campaigners, such as Sonia Gandhi, Smriti Irani, Rahul Gandhi, A.K. Antony, and others. Ironically, it is an indication that Nagaland is definitely a part of mainstream politics. The parties in the fray are the NPF (Naga People's Front), BJP, JD(U), UNDP (United Naga Democratic Party), NC, SP, NCP, RJD, Congress and a host of independents.
