It has been 17 years since France had a president from the left, but that might be about to change. Opinion polls continue to favor Francois Hollande, a candidate from the center-left Socialist Party, over center-right incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy in the upcoming French presidential election. If elected, Hollande would be the first left-wing president since Francois Mitterrand in 1995. Sarkozy is seeking his second five-year term, following Jacques Chirac, who served 12 years in office.

Former Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif is celebrating with his supporters, amid early signs that his party will be the largest after parliamentary elections. Media projections based on partial results suggest a big lead for Mr Sharif's Muslim League, and he has already claimed victory. The election should lead to the country's first transition from one elected government to another. The turnout was huge but the poll was marred by violence. In Karachi, the Pakistan Taliban said they planted a bomb which killed 11 people and wounded 40 others.

The 2014 general election will mark 30 years since a political party won a clear majority of 272 seats on its own in the Lok Sabha. Rajiv Gandhi achieved that for the Congress with over 400 seats in 1984. Since then, in 1989, 1991, 1996 and the four general elections that followed, no party has crossed 272 seats in parliament. For 2014, most parties’ ambitions are modest. The Congress thinks 140 Lok Sabha seats will be enough to stitch together a “secular” UPA-3 coalition. The BJP reckons it needs 180 seats to do the same for NDA-3.

BJP on Wednesday suffered a humiliating defeat in the Karnataka assembly elections with the Congress wresting power after a gap of seven years. The Election Commission said Prime Minister Najib Razak's Barisan Nasional (BN; National Front) coalition won 133 of the 222 in parliamentary seats - its worst-ever election performance. The opposition won 89 seats, up from 82, in Sunday's election. Defeated opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim accused the ruling coalition of widespread fraud.

Exit polls predict a Congress victory in Karnataka -

The Congress party is expected to win the assembly elections in Karnataka with an average 37% vote share, according to estimates by a majority of the exit polls. Election to the 224-seat state assembly was held on Sunday. An estimated 69% of 43.5 million voters exercised their franchise. There is a similar consensus among exit polls in terms of the vote share for other major parties, with the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)) estimated to win 20-22% of the total votes and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) 23-27% of the share.

In Malaysia, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's campaign is on song, sometimes literally so. He does tend to remind his massive rallies that it's "Now or Never". Even if everyone does not catch the allusion, no one misses the message. Maybe Anwar has at long last found time for a snatch of song after having suffered years of soul-searing, unbelievable injustice and political barbarism, because the mood around him is so buoyant. I write this on the eve of what could be Malaysia's most breathtaking election result in 56 years of history as an independent republic.
